Phylum platyhelminthes
Introduction to flatworms
Flatworms are bilaterally symmetrical and possess a brain and nervous system, although no circulatory or respiratory systems. This phylum is hermaphroditic, meaning eachdividual can produce both sperm and eggs. They vary in size from 1 millimeter to many meters, but all are thin and flat. Most of these species are parasitic and require a host, while others can swim in oceans and lakes. They are acoelomates
and have no body cavities. They use their eyespots, small clusters of light-sensitive cells, to find their way around. All motile flatworms use a wavelike gliding motion of their ribbonlike bodies in order to move around. They reproduce asexually as well as sexually.
